Trust in the Ground: Pad Mounted Transformers for Uninterrupted Energy.
01 General
1.1 Project Description
2000 kVA three phase pad mounted transformer was delivered to Canada in 2025. The rated power of the transformer is 300 kVA with KNAN cooling. The high voltage is 4.16Y/2.4 kV with ±2*2.5% tapping range (NLTC), the low voltage is 0.6D kV, they formed a vector group of YNd1.
SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformer is a compact, fully enclosed distribution solution engineered for outdoor and semi-outdoor applications. Designed with a corrosion-resistant steel enclosure and hermetically sealed core-and-coil assembly, this transformer eliminates the risk of dust, moisture, and external contamination, ensuring stable operation even in harsh environments such as industrial parks, commercial complexes, and residential neighborhoods. Boasting low no-load loss and low noise levels, it complies with international standards including IEEE, CSA and other international standards, balancing energy efficiency with reliable power distribution. Its ground-mounted design eliminates the need for elevated pole structures, simplifying installation, reducing site preparation costs, and enhancing operational safety for maintenance personnel and the public alike. Ideal for urban power grid upgrades and distributed energy systems, SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformer delivers consistent performance to meet diverse power supply demands.

02 Manufacturing
2.1 Core
| The three-phase three-limb core of the pad mounted transformer is precision-engineered using high-grade cold-rolled grain-oriented silicon steel, featuring a compact, symmetric three-limb structure that perfectly fits the transformer’s space-saving pole-mounted design. This core configuration ensures exceptional magnetic conductivity and ultra-low no-load loss, effectively minimizing energy dissipation during power conversion. Its robust construction enhances magnetic circuit stability, supports reliable three-phase power output, and withstands the vibration and environmental stresses typical of overhead installations, making it a key component for the transformer’s long-term, high-efficiency operation. | ![]() |
2.2 Tank
![]() | The tank of the pad mounted transformer is constructed from high-strength low-carbon steel, featuring a fully welded, hermetically sealed structure optimized for underground or semi-underground installation. It houses insulating oil to cool and insulate internal components, while its robust, corrosion-resistant finish and precision-welded seams protect against moisture, dust, and physical damage in pedestrian-accessible outdoor environments. The precisely cut openings and reinforced mounting points ensure seamless integration with auxiliary components, delivering long-term durability and reliable performance for urban and suburban power distribution networks. |
2.3 Luminol Oil
| The Luminol oil used in pad mounted transformers is a premium insulating and cooling medium engineered for the sealed, semi-underground operating environment of these units. It provides robust electrical insulation to prevent internal arcing between components, while efficiently dissipating heat generated during operation to maintain stable performance. With a high flash point, low pour point, and excellent oxidation resistance, it resists thermal degradation and extends the transformer’s service life, while its eco-friendly formulation meets modern environmental standards, ensuring reliable, low-maintenance operation for urban and suburban power distribution systems. | ![]() |
2.4 Oil Filling Valve
![]() | The oil filling valve for pad mounted transformers, crafted from corrosion-resistant brass as shown, is a manually operated component designed to control the safe injection and topping-up of insulating oil into the transformer’s sealed tank. Its robust, leak-tight construction creates a reliable hermetic seal when closed, preventing moisture and contaminants from compromising oil purity and dielectric performance, while the ergonomic handwheel enables precise, straightforward operation during installation and routine maintenance. |
2.5 High Voltage Bushing
| The high-voltage plug-in bushing for pad mounted transformers is a robust, epoxy-insulated component engineered for safe, rapid installation and removal in sealed underground units. It delivers reliable electrical insulation to isolate high-voltage conductors from the transformer’s metal tank, preventing arcing and leakage while resisting moisture, dust, and corrosion. Its plug-in design eliminates complex wiring, enabling efficient maintenance and minimizing downtime, making it a practical choice for urban and suburban power distribution networks. | ![]() |
03 Testing
The CSA-compliant Induced Voltage Withstand Test for pad mounted transformers is a critical insulation assessment, conducted per CSA standards to verify the dielectric strength of windings. A near-sinusoidal voltage (at a frequency above rated to avoid excessive magnetizing current) is applied to the windings, evaluating turn-to-turn, phase-to-phase, and winding-to-ground insulation. The test is maintained for the specified duration, with successful completion confirmed by no voltage collapse, flashover, or harmful partial discharges-ensuring the transformer’s safe, reliable operation in sealed, semi-underground environments.
04 Packing and Shipping
4.1 Packing
| The packaging of the pad mounted transformer involves placing a tin foil bag on the transformer tray, adding desiccant inside, covering the transformer with the tin foil bag (sealed with an opening for vacuuming before final sealing via a sealer), installing foam/plastic/cardboard corner protectors around the unit, wrapping it with protective film, and finally encasing it in a wooden crate marked with forklift and center of gravity indicators-ensuring rust prevention and safe transportation. | ![]() |
4.2 Shipping
![]() | SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformers are delivered via sea freight under CIF Edmonton, Canada terms; the units are secured in seaworthy, shock-resistant packaging, loaded into standard containers at the origin port, and covered by comprehensive marine cargo insurance against loss or damage until safe arrival at the Port of Edmonton, with full compliance to CSA standards and Canadian import regulations throughout the transit. |
