Pad Mounted Transformers: Maximizing Uptime, Minimizing Footprint.

01 General

1.1 Project Description

2000 kVA three phase pad mounted transformer was delivered to Canada in 2025. The rated power of the transformer is 500 kVA with KNAN cooling. The high voltage is 4.16Y/2.4 kV with ±2*2.5% tapping range (NLTC), the low voltage is 0.6D kV, they formed a vector group of YNd1.

For businesses and utility providers seeking a safe, cost-effective, and space-saving power distribution solution, SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformer stands as the optimal choice. Tailored to address the pain points of urban power management-including limited installation space, high maintenance costs, and safety hazards-this transformer combines a sleek, low-profile design with robust functionality. Its fully enclosed structure prevents accidental contact, making it perfect for high-traffic areas like shopping malls, school campuses, and residential communities. With minimal maintenance requirements and a long service life, it reduces total cost of ownership (TCO) for users while ensuring uninterrupted power supply. Whether for new construction projects or grid retrofits, SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformer delivers tangible value by boosting energy efficiency, cutting operational expenses, and prioritizing public safety.

02 Manufacturing

2.1 Luminol Oil

SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformers are infused with high-performance Luminol oil, a premium dielectric fluid engineered to deliver dual core benefits: exceptional electrical insulation that prevents arc faults and efficient heat dissipation that maintains optimal operating temperatures even in the extreme temperature fluctuations of Canadian climates. This specialized oil adheres strictly to CSA standards, boasts outstanding thermal stability and oxidation resistance to avoid premature degradation, and significantly extends the transformer’s service life while minimizing long-term maintenance needs-making it a reliable, cost-effective choice for safe and consistent power distribution.Luminol Oil

2.2 Winding

high-purity copper windingSCOTECH’s pad mounted transformers feature high-purity copper windings, which deliver superior electrical conductivity, minimal energy loss, and excellent thermal resistance to withstand the temperature variations common in Canadian operating environments. Precision-wound and coated with advanced insulation materials, these windings meet strict CSA standards, ensuring reliable performance, reduced heat generation, and an extended service life for the transformer-all while supporting stable power distribution for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

2.3 Tank

SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformers are equipped with robust, corrosion-resistant brass oil drain valve, featuring a user-friendly red handwheel for precise operation and a safety chain to prevent component loss during maintenance. Designed with a leak-tight seal to endure Canada’s harsh climatic conditions, these valves adhere to strict CSA standards, enabling safe, controlled drainage of Luminol dielectric oil during routine servicing or fluid replacement, thus ensuring reliable, long-term transformer performance.Oil Drain Valve

2.4 Final Assembly

Copper Grounding BusbarSCOTECH’s pad mounted transformers feature a high-purity solid copper grounding busbar, engineered to provide a low-impedance fault current path that ensures reliable electrical safety for both the transformer and on-site personnel. Precision-drilled mounting holes and heavy-duty brackets secure the busbar firmly to the transformer enclosure, while integrated grounding straps create continuous electrical bonding across critical components. Manufactured to meet strict CSA standards, this corrosion-resistant copper busbar delivers consistent performance even in Canada’s harsh temperature fluctuations and humid conditions, safeguarding critical power distribution infrastructure against electrical faults and ensuring long-term operational integrity.

2.5 Bayonet Fuse

The bayonet fuse in a pad-mounted transformer is a critical, externally operable protective device housed within a dedicated compartment. It typically consists of a removable fuse cartridge mounted on an insulated grip, designed for safe “hot-stick” operation by utility personnel. Its primary function is to provide overcurrent protection for the transformer, often on the primary side, by interrupting fault currents. A key feature is its dead-front design; the fuse can be safely extracted or inserted without exposing live parts, maintaining the enclosure’s safety even during maintenance. This design allows for quick isolation and field replacement, ensuring reliable service restoration.

03 Testing

The Applied Voltage Test is a critical dielectric integrity test performed on pad mounted transformers to verify the ability of their insulation systems to withstand transient overvoltages and normal operating stresses safely. Conducted in accordance with IEEE and CSA standards, the test involves disconnecting the transformer’s internal windings and applying a specified alternating current (AC) voltage-typically 1.5 to 2 times the rated maximum system voltage-to the primary and secondary bushings, as well as the tank enclosure, for a duration of 1 minute.

During the test, inspectors monitor for signs of insulation breakdown, such as arcing, flashover, or an abnormal rise in leakage current, which would indicate a defect in the insulation system. A successful test confirms that the pad mounted transformer can withstand temporary overvoltage events (e.g., lightning strikes or switching surges) without failing, ensuring reliable operation and reducing the risk of catastrophic failures or power outages in distribution networks.
