01 General
1.1 Project Description
This 1000 kVA three-phase pad-mounted transformer is built for one job-but actually handles two. It works as a solar duty step-up unit during generation, and just as naturally behaves as a distribution step-down transformer when the system backfeeds power. In other words, it doesn’t mind which direction the energy is going. PV in the morning, utility in the evening-it stays stable either way.
Designed for 480Y/277 V to 12.47 kV operation (and back again), it fits right into commercial solar plants, hybrid sites, and grid-connected facilities where bidirectional flow is normal rather than special. Its shell-type, 5-legged core handles the asymmetric loading and harmonic flavours of PV inverters, while still keeping losses at DOE-2016 levels-1,300 W no-load and 6,940 W load loss. The unit runs KNAN with FR3 fluid, which adds high fire safety and longer insulation life, especially in hot-running solar yards.

1.4 Why Solar Duty Matters Here
![]() | Solar duty isn’t a marketing phrase-it’s a different design mindset. PV systems inject harmonics, they backfeed at odd hours, they ramp fast, and sometimes they sit nearly idle at noon because of cloud cover. This solar duty transformer is built with that rhythm in mind. |
02 Mechanical & Structural Features
2.1 Sealed Pad-Mount Enclosure
Fully sealed and tamper-proof, this pad-mount enclosure keeps out moisture, dust, and unauthorized access. It’s built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions-rain, snow, heat, whatever the site throws at it.
2.2 High-Strength Tank Construction
![]() | The transformer tank is made of robust steel, designed to resist vibration, thermal cycling, and long-term outdoor stress. Combined with epoxy primer and polyurethane topcoat, it meets North American corrosion protection standards. |
2.3 Three-Phase Five-Legged Core
A compact five-legged shell-type core provides excellent harmonic performance, stable zero-sequence handling, and quiet operation. Its design also supports long-term mechanical stability under outdoor conditions and ensures consistent magnetic flux distribution.
2.4 Side-Mounted Instrument Cabinet
![]() | Conveniently located for easy access, the side-mounted cabinet follows standard utility layouts. Gauges and monitoring devices are organized for quick inspection, commissioning, and routine maintenance. |
2.5 Separate H0 and X0 Terminals
| H0 and X0 are brought out individually to allow flexible grounding checks and integration with utility protection schemes. This setup simplifies field work while keeping safety and performance reliable. | ![]() |
03 Grounding Shield & External Ground Pad
Grounding deserves its own section because solar sites are electrically noisy. Multiple inverters, long cable runs, and lightning exposure create conditions where grounding needs careful attention. This transformer uses:
• A full internal grounding shield – sits between the primary and secondary windings, quietly controlling electric field distribution, reducing high-frequency noise from inverter switching, and providing an extra safety layer during ground faults.
• A dedicated, external ground pad – mounted on the LV compartment for easy connection to site grounding grids. It reduces touch potential, improves lightning performance, and simplifies commissioning, especially when multiple loops and rods are involved.
Together, these features stabilize the transformer, keep fault currents controlled, and ensure predictable, safe operation in complex solar PV environments.
04 Utility-Grade Protection & Monitoring
This transformer comes fully equipped for safe, reliable operation in PV and distribution networks. Built-in monitoring and protective devices ensure smooth field operation and easy maintenance:
• Instrumentation & Monitoring – Side-mounted cabinet with essential meters and gauges, including oil temperature, oil level, and pressure relief monitoring.
• Protection & Switching – Four-position loadbreak switch, elbow-type surge arresters, and full fuse protection. All in a tamper-resistant, dead-front pad-mount enclosure.
• Grounding & Connectivity – LV spade terminals and an external ground bar simplify site grounding and integration with utility protection schemes.

06 Application Scenarios
This transformer isn’t just a piece of equipment-it’s the link between a solar farm, the local grid, and on-site loads. Picture a utility-scale PV array generating variable power throughout the day. The Solar Duty Transformer steps that low-voltage output up to distribution-level voltage, sending it to the grid. At the same time, it can handle reverse flows-feeding local facilities directly if needed, or balancing power during maintenance or outages.
It’s ideal for ground-mounted solar farms, large rooftop PV systems, and hybrid sites with storage integration. Anywhere power fluctuates, harmonics appear, or the load can swing quickly, this transformer keeps voltage stable, protects equipment, and ensures the site behaves like a well-mannered grid neighbor rather than a wild card.
