Monitor, Manage, and Optimize. Smart Pad-Mounted Transformers for a Resilient Grid.

01 General

1.1 Project Description

2000 kVA three phase pad mounted transformer was delivered to USA in 2025. The rated power of the transformer is 2000 kVA with KNAN cooling. The high voltage is 34.5GrdY/19.92 kV with ±2*2.5% tapping range (NLTC), the low voltage is 0.48Y/0.277 kV, they formed a vector group of YNyn0.

SCOTECH’s pad mounted transformer stands out as a high-performance, cost-effective solution for modern power distribution needs- packed with key features that set it apart in the market. Boasting a 3-phase 5-limb core and DOE efficiency compliance, it slashes energy waste and lowers long-term operational expenses. Filled with FR3 fire-safe fluid, it prioritizes safety and sustainability, aligning with global environmental regulations. Integrated surge arresters and a side-mounted meter cabinet add extra value by simplifying protection and on-site management, while the durable RAL 9003 powder-coated white finish ensures years of reliable service in outdoor environments. Compact, easy to install, and built to last, this transformer is the smart choice for distributors, EPCs, and project developers seeking quality and efficiency in one package.

02 Manufacturing

2.1 Core

The three-phase five-limb iron core of the inside pad mounted transformer is made of laminated cold-rolled silicon steel sheets, comprising three main limbs (for winding three-phase coils) and two side limbs. The side limbs provide a path for zero-sequence magnetic flux, cutting down no-load loss and operational noise. Its compact design fits the pad mounted transformer’s tank space, offers solid mechanical stability to support windings, and ensures efficient magnetic conduction for reliable outdoor distribution operation.inside pad mounted transformer core

2.2 Winding

The three-phase five-limb iron core of the inside pad mounted transformer is made of laminated cold-rolled silicon steel sheets, comprising three main limbs (for winding three-phase coils) and two side limbs. The side limbs provide a path for zero-sequence magnetic flux, cutting down no-load loss and operational noise. Its compact design fits the pad mounted transformer's tank space, offers solid mechanical stability to support windings, and ensures efficient magnetic conduction for reliable outdoor distribution operation. The winding of the inside pad mounted transformer (the coiled component wrapped in corrugated insulating paper in the image) consists of copper/aluminum conductors wound into high-voltage and low-voltage sections, layered with insulating cardboard for electrical isolation. Wound around the main limbs of the transformer core (arranged in three phases), it meets IEEE insulation and thermal standards, has mechanical robustness to withstand transit/operational stresses, and enables efficient voltage conversion and power transmission for the pad mounted unit.

2.3 Tank

The tank is a corrosion-resistant coated steel structure, designed to house core components (core, windings) and insulating oil while providing sealed protection against dust and moisture. Its surface features pre-set holes as interfaces for installing HV/LV bushings, valves and other accessories, and it has bottom support structures for on-site placement-meeting outdoor distribution equipment standards to safeguard internal parts for stable operation.inside pad mounted transformer tank

2.4 Final Assembly

inside pad mounted transformer active partThe active part (core assembly) of this inside pad mounted transformer is its core operational component: it integrates three-phase insulated windings (wrapped in insulating material), a laminated iron core, copper connecting bars, and insulated leads, all securely fixed on a metal support frame. This assembly ensures electrical insulation and mechanical stability, serving as the key unit for voltage conversion, and is tailored to fit the transformer tank while complying with relevant electrical standards.

2.5 HV Neutral (H0)

The HV Neutral (H0) of this inside pad mounted transformer is led out via a separate H0 bushing (the insulated ribbed component here), connected with a copper busbar. This setup draws out the high-voltage side neutral point, supporting flexible grounding configurations (e.g., direct grounding) as per distribution requirements, stabilizing neutral potential and boosting the transformer’s operational safety-all aligned with electrical standards for pad mounted units.HV Neutral (H0)

03 Testing

Let’s dive deep into the Induced Voltage Withstand Test-a mandatory core insulation test for liquid-immersed pad mounted transformers before leaving the factory.

Its primary purpose is to verify the insulation performance of the winding (including turn-to-turn, layer-to-layer insulation) and the main insulation between the winding and core/tank. It simulates the operational overvoltage and lightning overvoltage impacts the transformer may encounter during actual service.

During the test, to avoid core saturation, an alternating voltage of 150Hz (about 1.73 times the rated frequency) is applied to the winding. The voltage amplitude is set to “2×rated phase voltage + 1000V” per standards, and the voltage is maintained for 60 seconds. For the three-phase structure of pad mounted transformers, the test voltage is usually input from the low-voltage side; the target voltage is then induced on the high-voltage side via electromagnetic induction. Meanwhile, fluctuations in leakage current, partial discharge magnitude (required to be less than 10pC), and changes in the winding’s dielectric loss are monitored in real time.

There are also supporting checks before and after the test: Before the test, the breakdown voltage (required to be ≥30kV) and dielectric loss value (≤0.5%) of the insulating oil must be tested to ensure the insulation foundation of the liquid-immersed environment is up to standard. After the test, the insulation resistance of the winding is retested-if there is no significant drop in the value, the insulation is judged to be undamaged.

04 Packing and Shipping

4.1 Packing

The packaging of inside pad mounted transformer features a channel steel-reinforced solid wood base with leak test paper on the tray. The unit is fitted with foam/plastic/cardboard corner protectors, wrapped in protective film, then sealed in a desiccant-filled tin foil bag (vacuum-pumped and heat-sealed) to prevent rust. It’s encased in a fumigated wooden crate marked with forklift points and center-of-gravity indicators. Included accessories (load switch operating rod, T-wrench) are secured to the base, and ROHS-compliant, weather-resistant multi-language warning stickers are affixed as required.packaging of pad mounted transformers
