750 kVA Pad Mount Transformer Grounding - Engineered for safer fault protection, stable grid performance, and reliable underground distribution systems
01 General
1.1 Project Description
This project involves the delivery of a 750 kVA three-phase pad mount transformer to Canada-built under UL certification requirements and fully compliant with CSA C227.4:21 standards, targeting long-term operational safety, stable grid integration, and high reliability across residential, commercial, and industrial distribution networks; where continuity of service, and fault resilience, are not optional, but expected.
The unit runs on a loop feed configuration with a dead-front design-safer switching, better isolation, more flexibility in underground distribution systems. It steps down voltage from 13.8 kV to 0.6 kV, forming a clean and stable interface between medium-voltage supply and low-voltage utilization; steady behavior under changing load conditions, even when demand shifts.
In this setup, the pad mount transformer grounding design-not just a detail, but a structural part of the system logic-directly affects fault current handling, operational stability, and protection coordination. Especially in loop-fed networks; grounding continuity has to hold, must hold, otherwise system response becomes unpredictable.
1.2 Vector Group & Impedance
The transformer uses a Dd0 vector group, providing zero phase displacement and stable compatibility within loop-fed systems, ensuring smooth parallel operation in industrial pad mount transformer grounding networks at 0.6 kV level, with reliable performance under both balanced and unbalanced loads.
Its 4.75% impedance provides effective short-circuit current limitation and supports stable voltage regulation, enhancing overall safety and reinforcing the performance of the transformer grounding system under fault conditions in CSA C227.4:21 compliant installations.

02 Manufacturing
2.1 Core
The core is made of high-quality laminated silicon steel, ensuring low magnetic losses and high efficiency. The assembly process guarantees mechanical robustness and optimal magnetic performance. After manufacturing, the core is wrapped with protective plastic film to prevent moisture ingress, dust contamination, and oxidation during storage and transport, maintaining stable performance within the overall pad mount transformer grounding system. | ![]() |
2.2 Winding
![]() | The transformer uses copper windings with mineral oil insulation. The design supports ±2×2.5% NLTC tap adjustment, ensuring stable voltage output under varying load conditions and supporting reliable operation within the transformer grounding design requirements. |
2.3 Tank
The transformer features a sealed mild steel tank with bolted cover, finished in equipment green (Munsell 9 GY 1.5/2.6) for corrosion resistance and field identification. Designed for long-term durability, the tank integrates a complete pad mount transformer grounding structure, including a pressure relief device, oil drain valve with sampling function, and fill plug. A rigid copper grounding bus with spade terminals ensures effective earthing, maintaining full compliance with safety standards and reinforcing the integrity of the grounding system design. | ![]() |
2.4 Bushings & Terminals
| High-Voltage (HV) Bushings | ![]() |
| The HV side uses 3 separable insulated plug-in connectors rated 200 A, installed in the HV compartment. With 95 kV BIL, they ensure safe and reliable connection in loop-fed pad mount transformer grounding systems, providing strong impulse withstand capability and stable operation. | |
![]() | Low-Voltage (LV) Bushings |
| The LV side features 3 resin-cast bushings with 4-hole spade-type terminals, rated 30 kV BIL, ensuring secure and low-resistance connections for 0.6 kV distribution while supporting stable transformer grounding performance. | |
| Grounding Terminals | ![]() |
| Two dedicated grounding terminals with rigid copper bus ensure a complete pad mount transformer grounding system, providing reliable earthing for both HV and LV sides, improving fault current dissipation and overall system safety. |
