01 General
1.1 Project Description
150 kVA single phase pole mounted transformer was delivered to Canada in 2024. The rated power of the transformer is 150 kVA with ONAN cooling. The primary voltage is 19.92 kV with ±2*2.5% tapping range (NLTC), the secondary voltage is 0.12/0.24 kV, they formed a vector group of Ii0.
A single-phase pole mounted transformer is a type of transformer commonly used in distribution systems, primarily installed on utility poles. Its main function is to convert high voltage electrical energy into lower voltages for safe and effective use by consumers. This transformer is widely used in rural and urban distribution networks, especially in areas with relatively low power demands, such as residential areas, agriculture, and small industries. Since pole-mounted transformers are installed on utility poles, they effectively save ground space and reduce the infrastructure costs associated with cable laying. Equipped with protective devices, these transformers can prevent short circuits, overloads, and other faults, enhancing operational safety and reliability.

02 Manufacturing
2.1 Core
| Polarity shall be additive for all single-phase transformers in sizes 200 kVA and smaller having high-voltagewindings 8660 V and below, Polarity shall be subtractive for all other single-phase transformers. | ![]() |
2.2 Winding
![]() | The primary coil receives the input voltage, while the secondary coil outputs the transformed voltage. Depending on the turns ratio of the coils, the transformer can either step up or step down the voltage. The coils not only transform voltage but also transmit current. The magnitude of the current in the primary and secondary coils is inversely proportional to their number of turns, facilitating current transformation. The design of the coils should consider impedance matching with the load to ensure maximum power transfer and optimal operational performance. |
2.3 Tank
| The low-voltage grounding provision shall consist of a steel pad with a 1/2-in-13-NC tapped hole, 11 mm (0.44 in) deep. The threads shalbe protected by a corrosion-resistant flanged cup installed into the threaded opening ofthe unused ground pad.The transformer cover shall be electrically bonded externally to the tank, The location of the bond shall notinterfere with the lifting lugs. | ![]() |
2.4 Final Assembly
![]() | Preparation: Clean and inspect all components, including the transformer housing, core, windings, insulation materials, and cooling oil. Core Installation: Assemble and secure the core to the bottom of the housing, ensuring stability. Winding Installation: Install the high-voltage and low-voltage windings onto the core as per design specifications, ensuring proper insulation between the windings. Insulation Oil Filling: Pour insulation oil into the housing, ensuring it completely submerges the windings and displaces any air. Housing Sealing: Install and seal the upper part of the housing, ensuring that the internal components are protected from moisture and contamination. |
03 Testing
The enclosure to be tested shall be a new unit, complete with its core and coil, bushings, etc. The test shallbe conducted at ambient temperature with an initial internal pressure from 42 kPa to 48 kPa (gauge) (6 psigto 7 psig). The transformer being tested shall be securely supported by its support lugs and mounted clearof the earth. The testing requirements of lEEE Std C37.40 and lEEE Std C37.41 shall be followed. The testcurrent shall be symmetrical. A new enclosure shall be used for each test duty, A test duty shall consist of twotests. The second test shall be accomplished by reusing, “as specified by the manufacturer,” all of the originalcomponents in the enclosure. Provisions shall be made for venting in a safe manner any internal pressure thatremains after each test.
04 others
4.1 Pressure Relief Device
| pressure relief device typically consists of a frangible diaphragm or a pressure-activated vent cover installed on the transformer tank. In the event of a severe internal electrical fault, rapid gas generation causes a sudden pressure rise inside the tank. The PRD is designed to rupture or open at a predetermined pressure, thereby instantaneously and safely venting the high-pressure gases and hot decomposition products to the atmosphere. This controlled release prevents the catastrophic rupture of the main tank, minimizes potential fire hazards, and helps to protect adjacent equipment. The device often incorporates a flag or indicator that visibly trips during operation to signal that a pressure event has occurred. | ![]() |
4.2 Bushing
![]() | The porcelain bushing on a pad-mounted transformer is a critical insulating component that serves as the transition point for the transformer’s internal electrical conductors to exit the grounded metal tank. Constructed from high-strength, glazed porcelain, it provides excellent dielectric strength to insulate the energized conductor from the grounded transformer housing, even under wet and contaminated conditions. Its characteristic elongated, ribbed or skirted design increases the surface creepage distance, preventing flashover. The bushing assembly is hermetically sealed to the tank to maintain the integrity of the internal oil and typically features a terminal connection (such as a bolted pad or a cable accessory interface) for connecting to the underground or overhead distribution system. |
