25 kVA distribution pole transformer - dual-voltage with IFD, built for flexible, safe, and reliable rural power distribution
01 General
1.1 Project Description
In 2025, SCOTECH delivered a 25kVA dual-voltage pole mounted transformer to Canada, designed specifically for rural and low-density distribution networks. The distribution pole transformer steps down medium voltage to 120/240 V residential service and offers dual-voltage operation, allowing flexible connection to different primary voltage levels. This feature ensures adaptability for varying utility requirements, making it ideal for feeders with multiple voltage scenarios. The project followed CSA C2.2-06 standards and local utility requirements, with particular attention to surge protection, insulation reliability, and outdoor safety.
1.2 Project Highlights
This dual-voltage 25kVA pole mounted transformer combines flexibility, reliability, and safety:
- Adaptable dual-voltage design for varied primary networks
- Enhanced protection with IFD and surge arrester
- Wildlife and outdoor safety for rural deployments
- Built in-house at SCOTECH with full control over core, coil, and tank fabrication

02 Manufacturing
2.1 Core
| The transformer uses amorphous steel cores to achieve high efficiency and reduced no-load loss. These cores are precision-cut and stacked in SCOTECH’s workshops, providing lower hysteresis losses compared to conventional silicon steel, improving overall energy efficiency, and ensuring reliable performance in rural pole-mounted applications. | ![]() |
2.2 Pressure Relief Device-IFD
![]() | An optional Internal Fuse Device (IFD) is installed to protect the windings against internal short-circuits or overloads. The IFD acts quickly to isolate the affected section without interrupting the rest of the system, enhancing operational safety and reliability, particularly in remote distribution networks where maintenance access can be limited. |
2.3 18kV HV Arrester
| A high-performance 18kV surge arrester safeguards the transformer from lightning and switching overvoltages. Key parameters are selected based on the transformer’s voltage and rural installation environment. Combined with wildlife guards, it prevents insulation damage and reduces outage risk, extending service life in outdoor pole-mounted installations. | ![]() |
2.4 Final Assembly
![]() | The transformer is assembled in SCOTECH’s facility, including welding of the tank, manual deslagging, grinding, shot-blasting, and powder coating. Each unit undergoes inspection to ensure leak-free oil containment, structural durability, and corrosion resistance. The complete assembly guarantees safe, reliable, and long-term outdoor operation in Canadian rural networks. |

04 Site And Summary
Built for rural and low-density distribution networks, this 25 kVA dual-voltage pole mounted transformer steps down medium voltage to 120/240 V, serving homes, small businesses, and more. Its dual-voltage design lets it adapt to different primary feeders, making installation flexible and keeping utility inventories simpler. High-efficiency cores, aluminum windings, and a sealed oil tank make it tough for outdoor conditions-rain, snow, cold, you name it. Safety comes first, with an IFD for internal faults and an 18 kV surge arrester to handle lightning, switching surges, and even wildlife. In 2025, SCOTECH delivered this unit to Canada, fully made and assembled in-house, ensuring reliable, low-maintenance operation in remote settings.
