50kVA pole mounted transformer — Dual Voltage & IFD, built for reliable Canadian distribution
01 General
1.1 Project Description
This 50 kVA single-phase pole-mounted transformer delivers safe and reliable power for homes and small businesses. It is mounted on utility poles and steps down high-voltage electricity from the distribution network (12,470 GRDY/7,200 V) to standard 120/240 V output for North American 60 Hz systems.
The transformer has a laminated steel core that efficiently transfers energy between the primary and secondary windings. The windings are made of high-quality aluminum and are fully insulated to handle electrical stress. The unit achieves high efficiency (≥99.04%) with no-load loss of 130 W and load loss of 492 W, and features 2.15% impedance (±10%) for consistent voltage regulation under load. A Non-Load Tap Changer (NLTC) with a ±2×2.5% tap range allows fine voltage adjustment. An integrated Internal Fault Detector (IFD) monitors the transformer for internal issues. A 9 kV high-voltage arrester protects against surges. The transformer uses ONAN cooling and mineral oil insulation to ensure long-term outdoor reliability.
This 50 kVA single phase pole transformer is ideal for residential neighborhoods, farms, and small commercial facilities. It works well for rural and suburban distribution networks, network extensions, and temporary power setups. Its sealed tank and robust design make it reliable in harsh outdoor conditions such as snow, rain, and temperature extremes.

02 Manufacturing
2.1 Core
| In pole-mounted transformers, the core is also built to be compact and vibration-resistant so it can sit safely on utility poles. It stands up to wind, ice, and other outdoor conditions, while keeping no-load losses low — which is key for long overhead lines feeding homes and small businesses. | ![]() |
2.2 Winding
Our coils are made by experienced teams who follow clear procedures. Workers layer foil tightly for the LV coils and wind copper evenly for the HV coils. Supervisors monitor the steps and sign off on final tests. This mix of craft, checks, and teamwork keeps the transformers reliable in harsh field conditions.
2.3 Tank
| The transformer uses a sealed oil tank—fully closed, pressure-tight, built with strong welded construction. No pores, no sloppy seams. After welding, the tank goes through vacuum or air-tightness tests. The coating system is outdoor-grade: epoxy primer plus polyurethane finish, with all hardware corrosion-protected. Terminals follow standard layouts, and space is kept for arresters and grounding points without affecting lifting strength or mounting angles. Perfect for rough weather and long service. | ![]() |
03 Installation
Installation of a Pole-Mounted Transformer
Site Preparation
Select a suitable location for the transformer. The ground should be stable and accessible, and the site should be close to existing power lines. Clear away any rocks, vegetation, or obstructions in the area.
Pole Inspection
Inspect the utility pole before installation. Ensure it is structurally sound, free from cracks or decay, and capable of supporting the transformer’s weight safely.
Transformer Inspection
Examine the transformer for any signs of damage. Check the bushings, terminals, and cooling components to confirm they are clean and in proper condition.
Mounting the Transformer
Use a crane or hoist to lift the transformer into position. Secure it firmly to the pole with bolts and mounting brackets. Make sure it is level and stable.
Electrical Connections
Connect the high-voltage and low-voltage leads according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure all terminals are clean, tight, and properly aligned.
Grounding
Attach the grounding conductor to an approved ground rod or grounding system. This provides safety against electrical faults and improves system reliability.
Testing
After installation, perform standard electrical tests such as insulation resistance, polarity, and voltage checks. Confirm that the transformer operates correctly before energizing.
Final Inspection
A supervisor or engineer should carry out a final review. Address any issues or adjustments as needed to meet safety and quality standards.
Documentation
Record all test results, equipment details, and installation notes. Keep these documents for maintenance and future reference.
