In-Depth Comparison of Pad-Mounted Transformer, European Prefabricated substation, Chinese Hybrid Design

Introduction

Prefabricated substations

In today’s power supply system, box-type substations are indispensable “electricity managers”. The common types of box-type substations include European style, American style, and Chinese style. The terms “pad mounted transformer” and “European Prefabricated substation” refer to these.

American Pad-Mounted Transformer (ANSI/IEEE Standard)

Pad-Mounted Transformer

Design Philosophy:

  • Focuses on simplicity and cost-efficiency, designed for North America’s decentralized grid with “fault isolation and rapid maintenance” principles.
  • Complies with ANSI/IEEE C57.12 standards, emphasizing interchangeability.

Key Technical Details:

  • High-Voltage Side:

Elbow Connectors: 200A/35kV plug-in design with Bay-O-Net fuses; fault triggers mechanical trip.

  • Transformer:

          Oil-Immersed: 50kVA-10MVA capacity, step-lap core to reduce no-load loss.

  • Low-Voltage Side:

Compact design with integrated circuit breakers.

Applications

  • Primary Markets: Residential, commercial, and industrial areas in North America.
  • Key Features: Ideal for decentralized loads and space-constrained installations.

Pros & Cons

  • Advantages:

Compact size and flexible ground-mounted installation.

Low cost and easy maintenance (fuse replacement).

  • Disadvantages:

Limited HV protection; slower fault recovery.

Fire risk with oil-immersed design; less eco-friendly.

The pad mounted transformers adopts an oil-immersed transformer. The high-voltage side is protected by fuses to serve as protection against short circuits and overloads; the low-voltage side is protected by a molded-case automatic air circuit breaker, which offers overload long-delay protection, short-circuit protection, grounding fault protection, etc. The transformer body achieves non-electrical protection functions through the configuration of pressure relief valves, oil temperature gauges, and temperature controllers.

European Prefabricated substation(IEC Standard)

European Prefabricated Substation

Origin

  • Designed in Europe per IEC standards, prioritizing modularity and safety.

Structural Design

  • Modular Layout: Separate HV chamber, transformer room, and LV compartment (linear or triangular arrangement).
  • High-Voltage Side: SF6 ring-main units or vacuum switches with complete protection.
  • Transformer: Dry-type or oil-immersed (eco-friendly preference in Europe).
  • Low-Voltage Side: Advanced breakers with smart monitoring.

Applications

  • Primary Markets: Urban centers, hospitals, and data centers in Europe.
  • Key Features: High reliability for critical operations.

Pros & Cons

  • Advantages:

Comprehensive protection and high uptime.

Modular design simplifies repairs; eco-friendly (dry-type).

  • Disadvantages:

Larger footprint and higher cost.

Complex maintenance requiring specialists.

The European-style prefabricated substation installs high and low voltage switch cabinets and transformers inside an outdoor box. The layout is in the form of a “品” or a “目”. Inside, there are conventional medium-voltage switch cabinets / ring main units, low-voltage cabinets and transformers. The product is relatively large in size. The types of the high-voltage side of the European-style box-type transformer: one is to use load switches with current-limiting fuses, and the other is to use circuit breaker equipment; for the low-voltage side, it uses load switches with current-limiting fuses.

When the high-voltage side of a European prefabricated substation is equipped with a load switch and a fuse, its protection functions on both the high and low voltage sides are the same as those of an American box-type transformer. When the high-voltage side is protected by a circuit breaker, its protection functions should include overcurrent instantaneous trip protection, overcurrent protection, overload protection, and single-phase grounding short-circuit protection. Since the European transformer uses a dry-type transformer, the non-electrical protection is relatively simpler compared to American and Chinese style transformers, and only the overheat trip protection function is required.

Chinese Hybrid Design (GB Standard)

Chinese Hybrid Design

Origin

  • Combines American and European technologies, optimized for China’s grid conditions. The unique R-type high-pressure connection method, the independent structure of each unit, and the separate transformer room, high-voltage switch room, and low-voltage switch room are connected through wires to form a complete power supply system.

Structural Design

  • Hybrid Configuration:

HV Side: Modified ring-main units (e.g., XGN15) with SF6/vacuum tech.

        Transformer: Oil-immersed (S11/S13) or dry-type (SCB).

         LV Side: Simplified fixed-type breakers.

Enclosure: Enhanced anti-corrosion “triangular” layout for harsh environments.

Applications

  • Primary Markets: Urban/rural grid upgrades, industrial parks, and renewable plants in China.

Pros & Cons

  • Advantages:

Cost-effective and adaptable to local grids.

Maintenance ease between American and European styles.

  • Disadvantages:

Limited originality in core tech; relies on imports for high-end components.

Environmental concerns with oil-dominated models.

The high-voltage side configuration of the Chinese-style box-type transformer is different from that of the American-style transformer. The high-voltage distribution room of the Chinese transformer mainly consists of air-insulated ring main units, which include disconnectors, vacuum circuit breakers, current transformers, zinc oxide arresters, cable heads, grounding switches, and live display devices. The low-voltage side configuration is the same as that of the American and European transformers. In actual engineering projects, oil transformers are mostly used for the transformers.

According to the configuration of the primary equipment, the electrical protection functions of Chinese-style transformers include: overcurrent instantaneous protection, overcurrent protection, overload protection, and single-phase grounding short-circuit protection; non-electrical protection functions include: transformer heavy gas protection, transformer light gas protection, transformer oil level, and oil temperature. Chinese-type box-type transformers draw on the advantages of pad mounted transformers. The heat dissipation fins on the transformers are installed in an open manner, achieving a complete natural ventilation effect, which saves a large amount of energy loss, and at the same time eliminates the defect of unreliable fan performance caused by forced ventilation, which is prone to over-temperature and trip. It also realizes that all the live parts are completely sealed within the box-type transformer, and incidentally solves the dust prevention problem. It can be said that it achieves multiple benefits at once.
