What is a mobile substation?
Core Structural Modules of a Skid-Mounted Electrical Substation
1. MV Switchgear

Function: Receives medium-voltage power from the grid or upstream sources, providing switching, isolation, protection, and measurement functions.
Typical Equipment:
Circuit breakers, such as vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) or gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) breakers
Disconnect switches
Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs)
Surge arresters
Protection relays and control units
Installation: Typically installed in withdrawable or fixed cubicles to ensure safety and ease of maintenance.
2. Skid Mounted Transformer

Function: Steps down medium voltage to low voltage (e.g., 400/230V) to supply end users or equipment.
Types:
Oil-immersed transformers: Widely used with excellent cooling performance; capacities range from tens of kVA to several MVA.
Dry-type transformers: Environmentally friendly and low maintenance, suitable for sensitive environments.
Capacity Range: Generally from 1 MVA up to 5 MVA, customized based on load requirements.
Installation: Mounted on the skid platform with pre-arranged cable connections for quick installation.
3. Low Voltage Switchgear or Panels

Function: Distributes, protects, measures, and controls the low-voltage power output from the transformer.
Typical Equipment:
Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB)
Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB)
Current transformers (CTs) and energy meters
Distribution busbars and feeder circuits
Optional power factor correction equipment (capacitor banks)
Purpose: Ensures circuit protection, load distribution, and power quality monitoring.
4. Other Equipment
Inverter: Converts DC power (from photovoltaic panels or energy storage systems) to AC for integration into the MV or LV system.
Bus Duct: Provides efficient electrical power transmission, replacing traditional cable connections; compact and easy to install.
EV Charger: Supports fast charging of electric vehicles, typically installed at the end of the distribution system.
Energy Storage Management System (ESM): Monitors, controls, and optimizes energy storage devices to balance loads and provide emergency power supply.
Key Advantages of Skid-Mounted Substations
Skid substations and mobile substations are especially suited for temporary power supply, emergency response, or sites with space constraints. Their main benefits include:
Shorten the construction period
The skid-mounted substation adopts a modular prefabricated structure, and all manufacturing, assembly and commissioning work are completed in the factory. After the equipment arrives at the site, it can be put into operation after simple wiring and commissioning, avoiding tedious on-site construction, significantly reducing the interference of uncontrollable factors such as weather and environment, and effectively shortening the overall project construction period. Compared with conventional fixed substations, the deployment time is greatly shortened, usually completed in 2 to 3 weeks, while the construction period of conventional substations is 6 to 12 months.
Reduce construction costs
Traditional substations require a lot of civil engineering and high initial investment. The skid-mounted station is movable and reusable, supporting repeated deployment in multiple projects. It can be used for a long time with only a one-time investment, greatly saving secondary construction costs and manpower and material expenditures.
Easy installation and transportation
Through our pre-designed, simple, modular design devices, they are assembled and tested in the factory, which significantly reduces downtime, reduces risks and simplifies installation. The equipment is prefabricated on a self-supporting skid-mounted platform, with a stable structure and convenient transportation, suitable for rapid delivery and emergency deployment.
Compact structure and space saving
The equipment adopts a reasonable layout and modular design, with a small size and full functions, suitable for space-constrained projects or areas with strict restrictions on land occupation. Its modular design reduces the floor space by about 50%.
Built for Harsh Environments
The box structure is made of anti-corrosion and weather-resistant materials, with a high protection level (such as IP54 or higher), which can adapt to harsh environments such as high temperature, high humidity, wind and sand, and ensure stable operation of the equipment.
Integrated Delivery for Lower Project Risk
As a turnkey engineering solution, the skid-mounted substation is assembled, wired and fully tested in the factory, which can significantly reduce on-site trial and error and commissioning time, and reduce risks and uncertainties during project implementation.
Versatile Applications Across Key Industries
Skid Mount Transformer Solutions are widely adopted across various sectors due to their mobility, robust design, and quick deployment capabilities. Typical application scenarios include:
