To better support global power distribution and renewable energy projects, SCOTECH recently organized an internal product training session centered around Compact Substations for its international sales and project support teams.
As overseas projects become more application-specific, customers are paying closer attention not only to IEC compliance, but also to equipment configuration, transportation safety, installation efficiency, and long-term reliability. The goal of the session was to strengthen the team’s understanding of product configuration, project requirements, and practical export workflows.
The key materials from this session have been further organized into a technical guide for reference, covering system design, selection principles, IEC standards, and engineering practices: Compact Substation Selection and Engineering Guide
Compact Substation Fundamentals and Applications
The session began with the fundamentals of compact substations – their structure, operating principles, and overall configuration. Participants reviewed the functions of the high-voltage compartment, transformer compartment, and low-voltage compartment, along with the basic logic behind power transformation and distribution.
Several common application scenarios were also discussed, including utility distribution systems, solar power projects, and wind energy projects. Different compact substation design approaches for these projects were compared to help the team better understand how customer requirements can vary from one industry to another.
A real project case, the 1600 kVA Compact Substation Transformer (33/0.4 kV, Ethiopia, 2022), was also introduced as a practical reference to illustrate how compact substation solutions are implemented in overseas power distribution projects.
The training also covered practical selection topics frequently encountered in export projects, including:
- Compact substation transformer selection
- Vacuum circuit breakers and load-break switches
- Low-voltage switchgear configurations
- Enclosure structures and protection ratings
- Basic single-line diagrams and layout drawings
In addition, the session introduced quotation procedures, transportation planning, container loading precautions, foundation preparation requirements, installation guidance, and pre-commissioning inspections – areas that international customers often ask about during project discussions.
International Standards and Compliance Requirements
Because standards compliance is one of the most important concerns in overseas projects, special attention was given to IEC requirements commonly applied to prefabricated compact substations and related equipment.
The training covered several key international standards, including:
- IEC 62271-202 – High-voltage switchgear and controlgear – Part 202: High-voltage/low-voltage prefabricated substations
This standard specifies the technical requirements, testing methods, and safety requirements for compact substations.
- IEC 60076 Series – Power Transformers
Covering transformer performance requirements, insulation levels, temperature rise limits, and testing requirements for compact substation transformers.
- IEC 60439 Series – Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies
Related to the operational and technical requirements of low-voltage assemblies and internal LV components.
- IEC 61439 Series – Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies – Part 1: General rules
Providing supplementary design verification and safety requirements for low-voltage switchgear systems.
The training also emphasized the importance of understanding country-specific certification requirements and customer specifications, especially for export projects involving utilities, industrial facilities, and renewable energy installations.
Technical Selection and Export Project Coordination
From the export business perspective, the training addressed several practical issues that directly affect project execution:
- Cost analysis and quotation preparation
- Transportation planning and container arrangement
- Equipment securing methods during shipment
- Site foundation requirements
- Installation and commissioning precautions
These details are often overlooked early in a project, but they can significantly affect delivery schedules, installation efficiency, and overall customer experience.
Strengthening Collaboration Across Teams
The training brought together members from the international sales department, engineering team, production department, and quality control department, helping strengthen internal coordination throughout the project process.
Practical project examples and real compact substation design cases were also reviewed during the session. By combining technical discussion with actual export project scenarios, participants gained a more direct understanding of customer expectations and application requirements in different markets.
Supporting Global Power Projects with Continuous Learning
As a compact substation manufacturer serving global utility, industrial, and renewable energy markets, SCOTECH continues investing in technical training and product knowledge development across teams.
Through continuous learning and closer coordination between departments, the company aims to provide faster technical response, more accurate project support, and more reliable prefabricated compact substation solutions for customers worldwide.
